Ethical dilemmas can often include discovering other people’s secrets and lies, and may reveal enslavement, unexpected ethnicities, hidden/ lost indigenous cultures, convict ancestors, criminality, new DNA relatives, and finding that some relatives aren’t now biologically related. What information should and perhaps shouldn’t you include on your tree? People can study accredited courses and join professional bodies which have Codes of Ethics and Conduct, responsibilities and accountability, but delving deeper into your core values can aid decision-making. An ethical decision-making model will be introduced. Attendees will benefit from reflecting on their own ethical dilemmas in their family history research; and considering ethical issues with deeper empathy, sensitivity and diplomacy.
