One Field, Two Worlds: Can There Be a Professional Hobbyist?

Genealogy is often described as either a hobby or a profession. Hobbyists research their own families, while professionals conduct research for clients—or so the traditional distinction suggests.

In practice, the boundary is far less clear.

Many genealogists work at a highly advanced level without accepting clients. They may teach, publish, lecture, mentor others, volunteer for societies, manage major family-history projects, or apply professional research standards to their own work. Some earn occasional income from genealogy but do not consider it their profession. Others once worked professionally but now pursue genealogy primarily for personal interest.

Where do these genealogists fit?

During this Genealogy Café discussion, we will explore questions such as:

– What actually makes someone a professional genealogist?
– Is professional status defined by being paid, serving clients, following standards, possessing credentials, or something else?
– Can a hobbyist produce professional-quality research?
– Does accepting payment fundamentally change the responsibilities of the researcher?
– Are hobby and professional genealogy becoming separate communities?
– Is “professional hobbyist” a contradiction—or a useful description of an increasingly common role?
– How should organizations such as CAPG serve genealogists who occupy the space between hobby and profession?

This will be an open, facilitated conversation rather than a formal presentation. Participants are encouraged to bring their own experiences, perspectives, and definitions. Whether you work with clients, teach or volunteer, conduct advanced personal research, are considering professional work, or simply question where you fit, your perspective will add value to the discussion.
