Probability vs. Proof in Genealogical Conclusions
Date: April 8, 2026
Time: 7:00 p.m. – 8:15 p.m.
Location: Zoom
Recording: Yes
Genealogists often speak of “proving” relationships and identities—but what does proof really mean in a field built on incomplete, conflicting, and sometimes ambiguous evidence?
This Genealogy Café session will explore the distinction between proof and probability in genealogical reasoning. Through guided discussion and case-based exploration, we will examine how conclusions are formed, how evidence is weighed, and how confident we can—or should—be in our findings.
Rather than a formal presentation, this session will use a low-preparation, discussion-driven format with minimal visuals, encouraging participants to engage directly with the concepts and with each other. Attendees will be asked to consider real-world scenarios, evaluate competing interpretations, and reflect on how they communicate confidence in their own work.
Topics will include:
– What “proof” means in genealogy — and what it does not
– How the Genealogical Proof Standard supports reasoned conclusions rather than certainty
– Evaluating competing hypothesis and resolving conflicting evidence
– Using confidence language in written conclusions
This format reflects an ongoing effort to make Genealogy Café a space for professional-level dialogue and shared problem-solving, rather than lecture-based instruction.
Although Genealogy Café is typically a CAPG member benefit, this session is open to a wider audience. Guests and colleagues are welcome.
